Suicide
Nearly half of pregnant
Hondurans under 17 think of
committing suicide and 24
percent have tried to kill
themselves at least once.
A study revealed that none of
these young women have an
income, most of them barely
completed elementary studies and
seven percent never studied due
to lack of money or a
dysfunctional family.
On learning of their condition,
76 percent regretted having
unprotected sexual intercourse
out of wedlock and feared
community and family rejection.
While 88 percent of the
pregnancies were unwanted, 63
percent do not know how they got
pregnant and only 7 percent
admit to carelessness.
The website La Tribuna reports
that most of the girls live with
their boyfriends and relatives,
66 percent of their partners
drink alcohol, 49 percent smoke
and 21 percent take drugs.
In addition, 30 percent of this
group lack medical treatment and
have had more than two partners,
while only 40 percent receive
therapy.
