Chávez Will NOT Close Alunasa
In his regular program "Aló
Presidente", Venezuelan
president, Hugo Chávez, said
that he will not close the CVG
Alunasa plant in Costa Rica,
which closure had threatened the
employment of 400 people in the
small town of Esparza.
Chávez explained to his audience
that he had met with the worker
representatives of Alunasa and
received a written letter from
concerned Costa Rican plant
employees and the effect of the
plant closure.
Chávez said that the company has
"materia prima" - raw material -
for at least one month of
production and that it would
soon receive more shipment of
raw material for continued
production.
Chávez had threatened to close
the plant and move it to either
Nicaragua or Panama, denying
allegations that the closure was
because of a personal conflict
with Costa Rican president,
Oscar Arias, who had angered the
Venezuelan leader with comments
of a dictatorship in Venezuela.
Chávez said publicly that he was
considering closing the plant
for technical and economic
reasons and in now way was
politically motivated.
