Guatemala Police Purge Demanded
after Deputies Murder
Guatemalan policemen
participation in the murder of
three Salvadorian deputies and
their driver renewed the demands
in favour of purging that body
and the creation of the
Commission against Impunity (CICIG).
"Not another moment can be
lost," admitted Guatemalan
President Oscar Berger and noted
how urgent it is to begin
cleaning up the security forces.
Four policemen, among them the
chief of the Unit against
Organized Crime and three police
investigators, were arrested,
charged of being the authors of
the crime that has moved the
region.
The murders took place last
Monday when legislators Eduardo
Dáubuisson, William Pichinte and
Jose Ramon Gonzalez, and the
chauffeur, Gerardo Ramirez were
detained in this capital and
taken to a farm to be killed and
burnt later.
The capture of four members of
the Civil National police as
alleged suspects proved that
organized crime continues rooted
in the government security
institutions, said Deputy Pablo
Monsanto.
The original mistake was to
recycle agents from the
disappeared National Police to
be members of the Civil National
Police in three months.
President Berger recognized drug
trafficking has established a
north-south corridor that is
causing many problems to the
nation.
Menwhile Vice President Eduardo
Stein admitted "how difficult is
to fight the organized Crime
when is deeply entrenched in the
public institution itself," and
reiterated the need to count
with a CICIG entity.
That commission integrated by
international experts at the UN
service will help to solve high
impact crimes like the one that
happened to the three deputies
and the Salvadorian chauffeur.
