Mexico and Costa Rica book final
spots at FIFA Under-20 World Cup
Canada 2007
The field for FIFA Under-20
World Cup Canada 2007 is
complete after CONCACAF nations
Mexico and Costa Rica qualified
this weekend for the 24-nation
tournament.
Mexico and Costa Rica booked
their tickets to Canada Friday
after Mexico beat Jamaica 2-0
and Costa Rica rallied to edge
St. Kitts and Nevis 3-2 in a
qualifying tournament at
Culiacan, Mexico.
Both teams went 2-0 in their
first two games of the
four-nation qualifying
tournament assuring them of the
final two spots.
The two nations join Canada, the
United States and Panama as
CONCACAF representatives in the
tournament. Canada automatically
qualified as host nation.
Other notable qualifiers for the
52-match tournament include
Brazil, Argentina, Portugal and
Spain.
All 24 nations will be assigned
to six groups at the Official
Draw ceremony in Toronto on
Sat., March 3. The Official Draw
will determine the opponents for
each team along with venues and
match dates.
Tournament organizers also
announced the move of a group
stage match on Sun., July 8 from
the National Soccer Stadium in
Toronto to Montreal's Olympic
Stadium. The change was made to
accommodate spectators attending
both the Champ Car Grand Prix of
Toronto auto race and the FIFA
Under-20 World Cup match
scheduled the same day at
Exhibition Place, the site of
the National Soccer Stadium.
The Under-20 World Cup, FIFA's
second largest event after the
World Cup, will take place in
Victoria, Burnaby, B.C.,
Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and
Montreal from June 30 to July
22.
