Foreign Resident Must Take Exam To Become Citizens
Foreign residents living in Costa Rica and who are looking to become naturalized in Costa Rica are required to take classes in the history and idiosyncrasies of Costa Rican and Spanish offered by the Ministerio de Educacíob Pública (MEP), and irrispective of their nationality, must present to the Registro Civil the exam results.

The MEP operates classes all year round.

Registration for the exams on Social Studies and Spanish is open until February 28 at the Control de Calidad department in San José and the exams for both courses is set for March 18. 8:30am for Social Studies and 1:00pm for Spanish. The exams are being held at the Marcelino García Flamenco school in San José.

To sign up for the exams, the foreign resident must provide the original and copies of their identification, be it their residency cedula, passport or refugee status, fill out the form and pay the exam fee of ¢4.000 colones, by deposit to the Banco Nacional de Costa Rica, account number 128600-4.

The exam results will be available between March 29 and 30 and those with a passing mark of at least 70% will be able to submit their results, failing which they will have to take the exam again. And Again.

Foreign residents who have completed high school in Costa Rica need only to present their diplomas and are not required to take the exam.

Applicants for citizenship who are applying under the family status of being married to a Costa Rican citizen are exempt from having to take the exam.
