Panamanians Approve of President
Torrijos
As many as 65 percent of
Panamanians support the
management of President Martin
Torrijos government, 2.6 percent
over results of a January poll,
it was revealed Monday.
According to Dichter Neira
polling firm, only 28 percent of
those interviewed rated the
president s performance as bad
or very bad. The survey, made
February 9-11, has a margin of
error of 2.9 percent.
The ministers with highest
support for their work were
Balbina Herrera, housing - with
91.1 percent, Olga Golcher,
government and justice - 64.9
percent, and Samuel Lewis,
foreign affairs - 64.8 percent.
Although Torrijos enjoys high
popularity, his image has been
affected by the death of 51
people poisoned with adulterated
medicine, as well as the crisis
in public transportation, which
began after 18 Panamanians died
when a bus caught fire.
The late 2006 strikes by
teachers and retirees for
increased wages and pensions,
respectively, also damaged the
presidential image.
