Water More Expensive Than Milk
Costa Rica is one of the countries with lots of rain and one of the few that bottled water costs more than milk.

On average, a 600ml bottle of water costs ˘316 colones (us$0.61), while a 1000 ml (one litre) of milk costs between ˘285 and ˘295 colones (us$0.48 and us$0.57).

Jorge Patoni, general manager of Dos Pinos, says the situation is "incredible" to most in other countries.

The answer is nowhere to be found. The Florida Ice & Farm Co*., bottlers of Agua Cristal and the Coca Cola bottlers who have their own brand of bottled water, are being tight lipped on the subject.

Ricardo Sancho, president of the Aqueductos y Alcanterillados (AyA) - the water and sewer utility in Costa Rica - is also stumped on the subject.

Sancho adds that the water produced by the utility costs ˘0.23 colones per litre and is of the same quality as any of the bottled waters on the store shelves.

*The Florida Ice & Farm Co is also the bottler of the local beers like Imperial, Pilsen, Rock Ice and brands as Heineken, which is bottled locally under license.
