Nicaragua Appoint Sole Hague Ambassador
Nicaragua has appointed a single ambassador to handle and follow up on all trials on border disputes and territorial lawsuits against themat the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

According to a communiqué issued by the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry on Monday, the new ambassador to The Hague is Carlos Arguello.

Nicaragua is defending a number claims against it, mainly from Costa Rica who is demanding navigational rights of the San Juan river that divides the two countries.

Costa Rica does not lay claim to the river as it clearly belongs to Nicaragua, but has resorted to settling the claim of navigational rights of the river that was granted in a long standing agreement, with the international court following Nicaragua's refusal to honour the agreement.

Other countries filing claims against Nicaragua with the international court are Colombia over a dispute of ownership of the San Andres island.

San Andres is off the coast of Nicaragua but belongs to Colombia under an hundred year old agreement between the two countries, which Nicaragua now claims was not legal.

Nicaragua is also defending a claim from neighbouring Honduras. The two countries have had a long history of territorial disputes dating back to 1906, when they were in dispute over a coastal area. The dispute continues today.

Costa Rica's lawsuit  to be resolved by the international court is being handled by Mauricio Herdocia.
