Monday Morning Traffic Accident That Left Six Dead Under Investigation
A total of six persons died in yesterday morning's crash between a bus and a taxi, two more than the early morning reports, making Monday morning one, if not the bloodiest on record, where a total of eight people died in two separate early morning accidents.

The accident occurred at the intersection 100 metres east of the Central Comercial Don Pacho in San Antonio de Coronado.

The victims were identified as Francisco Valenciano Gutiérrez, 35; his stepdaughter Hellen Barboza Sánchez, 22; Susan Andrea López Rojas, 21, who was four months pregnant; and her mother Flora Rojas Esquivel, 51, who was accompanying her daughter to a doctor's appointment. The driver of the taxi, Adrián Solano Jiménez, 63, and father of six, also died in the accident.

The accident occurred when, according to witnesses, the taxi driver was making a U-turn, heading back to Coronado, when he was struck by the oncoming bus driven by Carlos Luis Varela López.

The crash was so violent that five of the victims lost their lives at the scene of the accident, the sixth, the taxi driver, died in hospital after spending a period of time trapped in his vehicle.

Paramedics at the scene said they got a cold chill on arrival, seeing the mangled vehicles and bodies. Additional Cruz Roja (Red Cross) emergency units were called in from Moravia and San José to help out the Coronado detachment.

Witnesses told Tránsito (traffic) officials that the bus, as most buses on the route, came barreling down the roadway at a high speed and adding to the tragedy was a slippery road from Sunday nights cold air and light rain in the air.

The driver of the bus was unhurt in the accident and told Tránsito a different version of the event than that of the eye witnesses and other passengers on the bus.

The accident is under investigation.

The driver of the taxi was trapped in his vehicle for some time and later died in hospital, making him victim number six in the tragic early morning accident.
