Costa Rica wins Central American
Cup
Costa Rica defeated Panama 4-1
in a penalty shootout after
tying 1-1 in regulation, and
claimed its sixth Central
American Cup in Sunday's final.
Luis Tejada scored for Panama in
the 36th minute, and Alonso
Solis almost doubled the lead
early in the second half when
his shot bounced off the post.
Costa Rica drew through Kurt
Bernard with five minutes left
in regulation.
Walter Centeno, Rolando Fonseca,
Carlos Hernandez and Michael
Barrantes converted their
penalty attempts for Costa Rica,
while Felipe Baloy and Victor
Herrera failed for Panama, for
which only Rolando Escobar
connected.
Costa Rica previously won the
title in 1991, 1997, 1999, 2003
and 2005.
Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala,
El Salvador, and Honduras
advanced to the CONCACAF Gold
Cup in the United States in
June.
