Ricky Martin And President Arias
in Fight Against Sex Tourism
The Estadio Ricardo Saprissa (Saprissa
stadium) will be buzzing with
activity tonight as Ricky
Martin, the Puerto Rican "rockero"
takes to the stage for his
waited concert in Costa Rica.
However, one other public figure
will be joining the Ricky
concert, none other that
president Oscar Aría Sanchéz,
who will also be hosting Ricky
at Casa Presidencial on Tuesday.
The ties between the two men go
beyond the music, but also to
make a joint announcement of the
launch of the campaign in Costa
Rica to stop sex tourism.
Martin has also appeared before
the United Nations to ask the
world body to help him in his
fight against the phenomenon
known as sex tourism. Martin
pointed to the fact that
millions of children are lured
into prostitution each year so
that perverts from around the
world can prey on them. Martin
referred to the practice as
"slavery" and urged government
leaders to crack down on child
prostitution.
While Martin's vendetta against
sex tourism seems to have come
out of the blue, he's actually
been advocating for childrens'
rights for years now. The singer
started a program called The
Ricky Martin Foundation a decade
ago, which is dedicated to
aiding children in need. The
Foundation has started something
called the People For Children
Project, which specifically
targets sex tourism.
“Apart from the responsibilities
we all have in respect to our
individual societies, we have a
collective responsibility to
uphold the principles of human
dignity, equality, and equity at
the global level… a duty
therefore to all the world’s
people, especially the most
vulnerable and in particular,
the children of the world, to
whom the future belongs”, Ricky
Martin, president & founder of
the Rick Martin Foundation.
