Two earthquakes hit Peru,
Ecuador with no one hurt
Two earthquakes on Tuesday
registering more than five
degrees on the Richter scale
shook the central Ecuador city
of Puyo and Peru's Amazonas
province, which borders Ecuador,
authorities from the two nations
said on Tuesday.
In Ecuador, the earthquake
registered 5.1 degrees, and
stuck inthe morning, the
Geophysics Institute of the
Polytechnic School in Ecuador's
capital Quito said.
The epicenter was nearly 200 km
deep in the east of Ecuador, the
Institute added.
The Peru quake registered 5.2
degrees, and its epicenter was
207 km north of Amazonas capital
Santa Maria de Nieva, 160 km
deep.
There have been not reports of
injuries, even though Peruvians
were worried because a 6.9
degree quake on Sept. 25, 2005
had caused serious damage.
Peru, which is part of the
so-called Ring of Fire in the
western Pacific Ocean,
experiences over 100 earth
tremors each year which are more
than five degrees on the Richter
scale.
