Argentina requests extradition
of Isabel Peron from Spain
Argentina has formally requested
Spain to extradite former
President Isabel Peron, who was
allegedly involved in
death-squad activities during
her 1974-76 rule, the foreign
ministry said on Tuesday.
Peron was arrested by the
Spanish authorities at her
residence in Madrid on Jan. 12
after Argentine Federal Judge
Raul Acosta in Mendoza ordered
her detention for questioning
about the disappearance of
student activist Hector Aldo
Fagetti Gallego in February
1976.
More than 1,500 leftists were
killed or secretly detained by a
right-wing death-squad called
the Argentine Anti-communist
Alliance, or "Triple A," during
Peron's 20-month rule, said
prosecutors.
They also believe that she
authorized the "annihilation" of
leftist "subversive elements."
Analysts expect a lengthy
extradition process, which can
take months.
Peron was ousted in a March 1976
coup. Both a Spanish and
Argentine citizen, the
75-year-old former leader has
been living in exile in Spain
since 1981.
