UNESCO Leads AIDS Drive in
Guatemala
UNESCO launched a campaign in
Guatemala against the
discrimination of AIDS patients
on Tuesday, because it said, 25
years after first hearing of
HIV, the patients still suffer
physical and verbal abuse and
social exclusion.
UN AIDS reports some 60,000
Guatemalans are HIV positive,
but only 9,000 are officially
registered.
Karina Arriaza, from the local
Health Ministry´s National AIDS
Control and Prevention Program,
lamented the myths, prejudice
and restrictions, even in the
home.
The campaign involves cultural
and artistic events, like
publication of the book "Un
canto a la vida (A Song to
Life)" and a photo display with
AIDS patients at the National
Palace of Culture.
The display consists of 48
photos by Cuban photographer
Julio Larramendi, who will take
them to several departments in
Guatemala and other countries
like Cuba, Nicaragua and Costa
Rica.
