Women Call Costa Rica to Defend
Rights
Costa Rica's INAMU (National
Institute of Women and other
three organizations called on
the Legislature to increase
female labour rights and
eliminate gender discrimination.
Eugenia Salazar, legal and
women's rights coordinator and
member of the legislative
monitoring committee, stated
that the Labor Code must be
renovated to help domestic
workers.
Defenders of women and Costa
Rican women s organizations are
promoting the changes to
eliminate discrimination that
persists against domestic
servants.
Salazar explained that the new
Labor Code should reform Chapter
VII, law #2 of August 27, 1943
(Law of Remunerated Domestic
Work), among others.
Among the reforms needed, she
mentioned an 8-hour day, with
one rest day a week, wages
appropriate to those stipulated
by the National Council and 15
days paid vacations a year.
