Only On In Three Drunk Drivers
Lose Their License
A family has lived the nightmare
of waking to a car in their
house, on two separate occasions
now. The latest incident
occurred in the early hours of
Saturday morning, as a drunk
driver plows through the front
gate and almost ends up in the
bedroom of don Asdrúbal
Chávez Vargas.
The house, located diagonal to
the Iglesia del Barrio Corazón
de Jesús in Heredia, was hit by
a 21 year old man who was
identified by Tránsito (traffic)
police as Marín Hernandez, who
issued the man a ticket for
being drunk at the wheel and
driving without a license.
The breathalyzer test resulted
in a reading of 3.29 or what
Tránsito authorities equate to
consuming 36 beers.
Costa Rica traffic laws sets the
legal blood-alcohol limit for
drivers at 0.05 percent, while
countries like Belize,
Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua,
Paraguay, Canada and the United
States set the limit at 0.08
percent.
Asdrúbal's family members, who
live next door to him, also
report having a car run into
their house as well, the
majority being drunk drivers,
who flee the scene.
In Saturday morning's accident,
the young man also fled the
scene. However, a group of taxi
drivers intercepted the driver a
couple of kilometres from the
house and held him for the
authorities. According to the
young man's father, they had
recently purchased the vehicle.
Given that accidents caused by
drunk drivers is a daily
occurrence on our roads,
officials data shows that only
one in three drunk drivers
actually lose their license, as
courts fail to properly punish
these types of offences.
