Call to Eradicate Child Labour
The program to promote Children's Educational Reform in Costa Rica called the government on Friday to focus on the situation of child labor in the country.

Program Consultant Ana Lucia Calderón pointed out that they are trying to work in conjunction with the government and have made several recommendations to eradicate child labor gradually.

She added that authorities' effort in that area are insufficient, as strategies and programs are not enough to meet the educational needs of the poor.

In order to assess the current situation, Calderon suggested regulating and harmonizing the minimum work age.

She pointed out that due to their difficult situation, many families force their children to drop out from school and start working at the age of 15.

Calderón called on the Arias government to implement policies and programs as soon as possible to protect children and to offer them incentives to attend school.

The program consultant noted the need to encourage children to return to workers´ schools, and called to promote the participation of private companies in extending and improving educational services for children.

The study shows the labor situation of Costa Rica's underaged population, how long they work and how much they earn. It also showed the educational problems of children.
