Venezuela Fights Price Gougers
Welfare for 26 million
Venezuelans is currently a
priority of the national
government, which is designing
policies to halt inflation and
eliminate speculation with basic
products.
In the framework of this
strategy, communications and
information minister, William
Lara, warned that the president
will work swiftly, firmly and
with the law in the fight
against hoarders of basic food
products.
Rodrigo Cabezas, Finance
minister, said they will use tax
institutions, state security and
armed forces when necessary.
Authorities rejected a situation
of shortage observing that some
commercial agents are involved
in actions that affect the
stability of the population.
The government will also work to
purchase food to satisfy the
growing demand in the internal
market and prevent rising
prices.
Statistics for 2006 also
revealed that there was a
reduction in the unemployment
index and an increase of the
minimum salary.
