First Dole Banana Plantation
receives Rainforest Alliance
Certification
The Standard Fruit Company,
representative of the interests
of Dole in Costa Rica, certified
its first banana plantation (Finca
Esperanza, 120 workers and 1990
hectares) under the criteria of
the Rainforest Alliance.
It means according to the
certification: a sustainable
agriculture and respectful of
the environment. Dole
compromises to reduce the use of
agrochemicals, protection of
rivers, water sources near the
plantation and enhancement of
the management of wastes (e.g.
plastic residues after
harvesting).
Socially, Rainforest Alliance
will control the instruction on
fumigation, use of hazardous
materials and good treatment to
the workers.
In 2004, Standard Fruit Company
was indirectly involved in a
demand before the Central
American Court of Water (In
Spanish, Tribunal
Centroamericano del Agua) when
the Ancón Group (Finca Carrandi)
contracted a fumigation firm,
filial of the Standard Fruit.
Prosecutors argued that the
fumigation was affecting the
water sources of the region
Limón.
