Puntarenas Carnival Kicks Off;
Tránsito Officials On Guard
The Policía de Tránsito (traffic
police) said they will continue
they fight against drunk driving
and speeding on the nation's
highways as the annual
Carnavales Puntarenas kicked off
yesterday.
The intense action taken during
the Palmares festival paid off,
according to Tránsito officials
who are quick to point out that
during Palmares there are no
serious accidents to report,
issuing 2.500 traffic tickets
and detaining 63 vehicles that
were being driven by those under
the influence of alcohol.
Given the success of Palmares,
Tránsito officials say they will
not stand by with crossed arms
during the Puntarenas festival
and will continue with their
zero tolerance policy on
drinking and driving.
The Carnavales Puntarenas began
last night with the election of
the "Reina 2007" (carnival
queen). The festival will also
include, in addition to the bars
and nightly parties, a fishing
tournament, sports activities,
open air concerts, art shows,
parades, music, fireworks and
much more.
The Carnavales Puntarenas
continues with daily and nightly
activities until February 18.
However, it is the weekends that
draws the biggest crowds and the
most fun for those in
attendance.
The festivities are organized by
the Comisión Organizadora de los
Carnavales Puntarenas, who
welcomes everyone to join the
port city party.
