Nobel prize winner to run for
Guatemala president
Rigoberta Menchu, the Guatemalan
who won the 1992 Nobel Peace
Prize, said on Wednesday she has
decided to compete in the
nation's September presidential
elections, according to reports
reaching here.
"Our team, our initiative, our
group and the people with whom I
am going, are determined to go
for the presidency," the
indigenous people's leader told
reporters in Guatemala City.
However, she is yet to determine
from which party she is going to
seek support for her candidacy.
Menchu is set to meet with
Encounter for Guatemala Party (EG),
led by Nineth Montenegro, on
Friday, to discuss what
conditions she has to meet to
join them.
"There is a negotiation to be
undertaken with the EG. If we
reach an agreement happily we
will go ahead. If not, we will
be sad, but we are listening to
other options and we have a plan
B," she said.
Montenegro, who has campaigned
for human rights in her country,
told media that nothing was yet
certain, and but said that
"there is a good chance that
Menchu will be our presidential
candidate."
If elected, she would become the
second indigenous head of state
in Latin America after Bolivia's
President Evo Morales, who took
office last year.
