Honduras Restarts Dengue Fever
Fight
Operations for cleaning and
fumigation to prevent dengue
fever were restarted in Honduras
Monday, beginning with the city
of San Pedro Sula (175 miles
north of the capital) local
authorities informed.
"No case of hemorrhagic dengue
fever has been registered this
year so far," authorities
reported, but admitted three
suspicious cases of the classic
dengue fever had appeared,
causing Public Health
authorities to take action to
avoid propagation.
While the traditional infection
causes fever, hemorrhagic
infection causes death without
rapid medical attention.
Nerza Paz, director of public
health in San Pedro Sula, said
the main problems are places
where water collects, such as
barrels, tires and flower vases,
where the transmitting
mosquitoes can lay their larva.
It is estimated that 66 percent
of Hondurans live in
insufficient housing and extreme
overcrowding, with four to 10
people sharing a room and only
basic and sometimes nonexistent
services.
Such conditions allow
proliferation of diseases such
as diphtheria, dengue fever and
respiratory diseases.
