Nicaragua sends peacekeepers to
Guatemala, Dominican Republic
Nicaragua's legislature, the
National Assembly, on Tuesday
authorized soldiers to take part
in peacekeeping operations in
Guatemala and the Dominican
Republic.
Eight troops will join the
Central American Armed Forces
Conference in Guatemala, where
they will join the Humanitarian
Rescue Unit. They will then move
to the Dominican Republic to
take part in celebrations
commemorating the Caribbean
island nation's independence.
Omar Halleslevens, head of the
Nicaraguan army, told media that
the mission was part of the
nation's efforts to create an
atmosphere of friendship, trust
and cooperation in Guatemala and
the Dominican Republic.
He added that the army already
has good relations with the
armed forces of Honduras,
Guatemala and El Salvador.
