Satellites Save Trees
The use of satellite technology enabled the Costa Rican Ministry of the Environment (MINAE in Spanish) to save 11,000 trees located in forest areas owned by private citizens who had planned to fell them.

According to Costa Rican forest laws, trees in forests cannot be cut down, but they can when isolated in pastures – for example –, pending prior authorization.

MINAE found that farmers resorted to several tricks in order to be authorized to fell certain trees, but now that has been stemmed by resorting to the GPS.
