Ciudad Guatemala Uses New
Transportation
The Guatemalan capital will
have, from Saturday on, a
Transmetro, which will improve
public collective
transportation, and allow
reducing traffic jams in this
two-million-inhabitant city.
"This is a new experience, not
only in Guatemala, but also in
Central America," said the Major
Alvaro Arzu, and added that the
system has already been applied
successfully in other countries,
as those of South America.
In its first phase, the
Transmetro will have capacity to
transfer 180,000 passengers a
day in articulated buses, from
the South to the capital´s civic
center.
The system, which will be
extended to other areas, will
alleviate traffic and reduce
environment al pollution,
because the so called
short-route trucks will be put
out of circulation.
In this city of constant attacks
to transportation, security will
be another advantage, because
there will be police agents on
the four transmetro stations.
The population will be able to
use this transportation service
during 19 daily hours, from
Monday through Sunday, at the
cost of one quetzal ($0.13
approximately).
According to the town council,
the Transmetro will modernize
the Guatemalan capital, and
raise its standard to that of
other cities in the region.
