Honduras Warns of Rotavirus
Danger
A total of 100 suspected cases
of Rotavirus caused Honduras to
issue a preventive warning on
Thursday, calling to improve
sanitation to prevent the
gastrointestinal infection from
spreading.
Claudia Quiroz, coordinator of
the Health Department´s Control
Program, told media that some 28
hospitals and 5,000 rural
clinics are ready to provide
treatment.
Human rotavirus types cause
vomiting and diarrhea and are
the most common cause of severe
diarrhea in young children,
killing 600,000 children every
year in developing countries.
Quiroz said that there were
6,400 suspected cases of which
1,143 were positive last year,
chiefly in populations where
lack of clean water produces
lack of hygiene.
The health official said that so
far there have been no
fatalities and recommended
medical care for children under
five with vomiting, high fever,
diarrhea and dehydration.
