Drunk Driving in Double Accident Injures Five
Drinking and driving has become such a problem on the roads that even Tránsito (traffic) police are not safe in doing their jobs, as evidenced by last nights spectacular accident on the Autopista Prospero Fernandez just before the Guachipelin exit, west of Multi Plaza in Escazú.

Four emergency units had to be called to the scene of the multiple accident that injured five people, include a Tránsito official who was on the scene of the first accident where a woman driving under the influce of alcohol collided with another vehicle.

While the Tránsito official was attending the first accident, another woman also driving under the influence of alcohol, hit the vehicles involved in the first accident.

Adrián Artavi is the third Tránsito official this year to be hit by a driver under the influence of either alcohol or drugs. In January, a man under the influence of drugs hit two police motorcycles, injuring both Tránsito officials.

In the early hours of this morning, Holaya Bermúdez was the first driver to almost had her leg amputated when she flipped over her vehicle. Bermúdez was taken to the hospital San Juan de Dios in San José in delicate condition.

The first accident occurred just after 1:00am. Minutes later, a vehicle driven by Andrea Piza, came barreling along and hit the tow truck pulling out the Bermúdez vehicle and struck Artavi, who suffered a fractured leg and the tow truck driver and his assistant.

Piza, who was visibly drunk following the accident, suffered a broken ankle.
