Guatemala for Menchu as
President
The political group Encounter
for Guatemala, led by deputy
Nineth Montenegro, is
considering the possibility of
putting the indigenous leader
and Nobel Peace Prize winner
Rigoberta Menchu forward as
presidential candidate.
"As a woman and social activist
I would feel honored if she
accepts", said Montenegro after
stressing that in her personal
view some members of her
organization had been in contact
with the Goodwill Ambassador of
the Peace Accord.
The secretary general of the
meeting announced her intention
to meet Menchu in ten days to
formalize the proposal and
listen to her points of view.
Questioned on the issue the
indigenous leader refused to
talk about that group specific
initiative and added she is
opened to converse with all
parties.
In declarations published by the
XXI Century newspaper she
appreciated the organizations
faith in her as candidate for
the September elections,
although she warned that any
determination will be within the
group and not individual.
The Nobel Peace Prize praised
the Bolivian government s
President Evo Morales for his
support of fellow indigenous
citizens in his policy.
