Brazil's Population Grows at Annual Rate of 1.2% in 2002-2007
Brazil's current population is 183,987,291, growing at an annual rate of 1.2 percent during the 2002-2007 period, a study released by the Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute (IBGE) said on Friday.

The study showed uneven population growths in different regions. For instance, the northern border state of Amapa witnessed a 3.17 percent growth rate while the state of Rio Grandedo Sul in southern Brazil only 0.57 percent.

It also revealed an increasing imbalance between the country's male and female populations. In 2002, the sex ratio was 1:1. Now it has fallen to 99.6 men per 100 women.

The study was conducted in the cities with less than 170,000 inhabitants. 97 percent of Brazil's municipalities are of this size.
