"Detener el Sida. Mantener la Promesa" (Stop Aids. Keeping the promise) is the Costa Rica's strategy to face the illness and as is done in other countries, aims to raise the conciousness of the people.

"Each one of us has to decide if they are going to join in the fight, now, or simply walk among the victims, hoping never to become one", said Costa Rican president Oscar Arias in announcing the program.

Arias added that there is a need for society to change.

Local radio and television ads have been promoting AIDS awareness in the past week with the slogan "less partners, less risk".

The national strategy commits state institutions to strengthen then response in education, health and prevention.
