Legislators Presented
With Motion To Open
Fixed Line Telephony To
Competition
The Instituto
Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE) - the
state monopoly on
telecommunications - is
lobbying legislators to
vote against a proposal
that would would open up
the "fixed" lines to
competition.
ICE president, Pedro
Quirós, has asked the
head of the Partido
Liberación Nacional (PLN)
party - the ruling party
- to leave the fixed
line regulations as they
are and not approve the
motion present lasted
week to legislators.
The approval of the
Tratado de Libre
Comercio (TLC) - free
trade agreement with the
United States and
Central America and the
current discussions on
the complimentary law
that would permit
competition in the
telecommunications
sector had always been
focused on cellular
service and
international calls
traffic.
However, the current
proposal before the
legislators would
include fixed line
telephony.
ICE's president said the
proposal has "generated
fear among those who
prefer to see fixed line
telephony stay in the
hands of ICE".
