44.000 Vehicles Still Without Riteve Inspection
According to Riteve, the annual vehicular inspection authority, there are still 44.000 vehicles circulating without their 2007 inspection.

All vehicles have to be inspected once a year, save for taxis which are twice a year, from January to October. The last number of the license plate determines the month the vehicle has to be inspected, 1 for January through 0 for October.

November and December, Riteve is busy with re-inspections for October and vehicles who haven't done their annual inspections, as the it is required to the payment of the Marchamo, the vehicular circulation permit which is payable by December 31.

Vehicles without the Marchamo are exposed to a fine and possible confiscation of the vehicle.

In the past years, the Policía de Tránsito (traffic police) always gave a 15 day grace period, not fining owners of vehicles with an expired Marchamo until the middle of January. The grace period was necessary fue to the small number of locations that Marchamo could be paid and the long lines, especially during the last week of December.

However, now the Instituto Nacional de Seguros (INS), the state insurance operator that collects the Marchamo, allows it to be sold at all insurance agency offices, banks and other financial institutions, with some 800 sale points across the country and no excuse for not paying on time.
