Inequity Affects Water Access in
El Salvador
Water access in El Salvador
denote the line of poverty,
social equity, gender, and
possibilities for personal
development, the Consumer
Protection Center stated
Thursday.
Poverty is the main cause of
exclusion for safe, adequate
access to water, aggravated by
the lack of suitable national
policies, the organization said
in a report.
The text corroborated
deforestation, soil degradation,
and contaminated waters, both
superficial and underground,
hamper the capacity to collect
and make the best use of the
vital liquid, while affecting
quality of the service in the
territory.
According to the UN Development
Program, domestic, industrial,
agro-industrial, and
agricultural wastes continue to
be the main sources of water
contamination the El Salvador.
Only 82 of the country´s 262
municipalities have sewer
services, and only two or three
percent of sewage in urban zones
are treated before launched to
rivers or streams.
