US Increases Deportation of
Guatemalans
Over 4,400 Guatemalans were
deported from the United States
during the first quarter of this
year, according to figures
revealed by Guatemala s General
Immigration Office (DGM) on
Wednesday.
This upward trend in
repatriations has been seen
since mid-2006, in the wake of
the Washington s decision to
intensify the measures against
immigrants and build a wall
along the Mexican border to curb
immigration from the South.
According to DGM, people
deported included 3,762 men, 514
women and 192 children.
An average of 50 Guatemalans are
deported daily, which means that
in 2007 the number of people
expelled from the US will exceed
the 18,000 registered last year.
Humanitarian organizations have
denounced the increase of US
raids on illegal immigrants and
continued violations of their
rights.
At least 1.5 million Guatemalans
live abroad, mostly in the US,
with more than half of them
lacking legal papers.
