Ortega Melts Bush Ethanol
Fantasy
Nicaraguan President Daniel
Ortega accused his US
counterpart, George W. Bush, of
triggering the prices of
fertilizers, land, and farm
implements with his "fancy"
pro-ethanol campaign.
In a meeting with members of his
cabinet last night, Ortega said
he is causing a rise in the
prices of corn and sugar
cane-growing lands, consequently
increasing the prices of
fertilizer, farm tools, and
tractors.
The rise in urea prices attempts
against food production, Ortega
stated, adding that upward trend
will affect coffee and other
growers, unaware of what he
called a "fancy ethanol plan."
The Nicaraguan president has
reiterated in the last weeks he
refuses to use the land to
produce ethanol from intensive
corn and sugar cane farming,
considering it will imply the
return of monoculture in the
region.
He also stated he fully agrees
with Cuban president Fidel
Castro that large-scale
production of ethanol as fuel
endangers human food production.
