Guatemala Begins Longest Holiday
Guatemalans began the longest
holiday of the year to mark the
religious celebrations of the
Holy Week in which hundreds of
thousands of persons travel to
the beach and tourist centers.
Deputies to the Congress of the
Republic were the first to stop
working and the plenary sessions
were at a standstill until April
11 and a few parties planned
activities in those days.
The legislators were followed by
educational centres and most of
the state and municipal offices
will gradually close adding the
private enterprise since
Wednesday.
Work recess gave way to an
exodus to recreation centres,
beaches and other attractive
tourist centres that give the
city an empty and silence
appearance.
Even the political parties
announced a break in the
propaganda campaign and most of
the sports competitions were
postponed.
Meanwhile, those enterprises
devoted to provide
transportation service, food and
accommodation expect to obtain
great profits in one of their
most active periods.
But this year is expected a
clear reduction of visitors due
to the problem of public
security in the last two months.
