Fires Keep Firefighters Busy in Guanacaste
Hot temperatures, dry air and strong winds has caused problems for firefighters in the Guanacaste region to control one of several fires that has kept more than 200 people busy over the weekend.

So far more than 1.800 hectares have burned.

Two of the fires in the Barrahonda de Nicoya and Zona de la Cruz are under control, however, three more are threatening the national park and surrounding areas.

Preliminary reports indicate that hunters in the area may have caused the spark to a fire that expanded rapidly due to the strong winds and the high temperatures in the region.

The Comisión de Emergencias (Emergency Commission) has installed a temporary command post in the area and is providing support to firefighters and MINAE (Environment Ministry) personnel that has been working around the clock to keep the fires under control.

One of the fires has caused for the Policía de Tránsito (traffic police) to regulate traffic on the Inter American highway in the areas of Parque Santa Rosa. Earlier reports said that traffic had been completely closed off on the major highway. however, transit officials were quick to respond that they highway is open, but regulated.
