Nicaragua Miffed at Spanish
Company
As they say in boxing, the
Spanish Union Fenosa company, in
charge of distributing
electricity in Nicaragua, is
currently against the ropes and
on the verge of being "knocked
out" by the government.
Nicaraguan President Daniel
Ortega gave it the first
"straight punches," warning it
twice publicly that the
government could boot the
transnational if it continues to
refuse to comply with its
investment commitment to
Nicaragua.
Union Fenosa has had control of
electricity distribution in
Nicaragua since 2000, when the
government of then president,
and now accused of corruption
Arnoldo Aleman privatized the
service.
According to the current
president, the Spanish company
has not kept the promise made
seven years ago, of investing in
the Central American country s
electricity distribution system.
Union Fenosa is responsible for
the constant and prolonged power
outages that its more than
600,000 Nicaraguan clients
suffer, and energy theft by
people connected illegally.
There is general social
discontent against the
transnational, because the
population is complaining about
the power cuts that sometimes
last up to 12 hours and do not
appear in the bills, which are
bigger every time.
Managua Mayor Dionisio Marenco
appeared even more radical than
Ortega, considering that not
only the Spanish transnational
should be nixed, but also all
the private generating stations.
