Costa Rica Will Not Accept
Consensus Candidacy at UN
Council
Costa Rica would not accept to
be a "consensus" candidate to
occupy the UN Security Council
seat that is currently pitting
Guatemala against Venezuela,
President Oscar Arias said on
Friday.
Arias indicated that the Costa
Rica would rather wait to join
the council for the period
2007-2009, in a candidacy that
San José has been actively
pursuing for months.
The 192-nation UN General
Assembly decided to call off the
voting between Venezuela and
Guatemala on Thursday after the
35th vote, and plans to resume
Wednesday.
To win the council seat and
replace Argentina on 1 January
2007, either country must
receive at least 124 votes, or a
two-thirds majority of the
assembly.
Costa Rican Ambassador to the UN
Jorge Urbina said earlier this
week he has received
encouragement from several
countries for the Central
American nation to become a
potential compromise candidate.
