Yesterday Was Coldest November
Day in 25 Years
Yesterday morning at 7:00am, the
lowest temperature for the year
- 12.5 Celsius (54.5 Fahrenheit)
- was recorded by the Instituto
Meteorológico Nacional (IMN) for
the San José area.
In the mountain areas, Cartago
and San Ramón temperatures
dropped to even lower. Though
the IMN doesn't have a weather
station for an exact temperature
reading at the Cierro Chirripó,
with an elevation of 3.819
metres (12.532 feet) the highest
point in Costa Rica, the
weatherman says that it probably
hovered just above the freezing
point.
The IMN says that a cold front
located between Panama and
Colombia is the cause of the low
temperatures and strong winds
that will be with us at least
until tomorrow (Friday).
Today's temperatures will be
similar to Wednesday's, strong
winds with cold, chilling
temperatures in some parts of
the Central Valley, especially
in the higher elevations. In
areas like Moravia, gloves, hats
and coats where the norm, while
in downtown Alajuela, the
temperature was much warmer,
requiring only a sweater.
The IMN is predicting
temperatures to hit a high of 25
Celsius today and back up to the
norm of 28 Celsius during the
day by Friday, while night
temperatures are expected to
hover in the 15/16 Celsius, well
below the norm of 19/20 for the
rest of the week.
In the beach areas of the North,
South and Central Pacific (Guanacaste,
Golfito, Jacó) the temperatures
are also below normal, with
daytime highs in the 31/32
Celsius, while it cools down at
night to a low of 19 Celsius.
The Caribbean area (Limón,
Puerto Viejo) and the northern
zone (Sarapiquí, San Carlos, Los
Chiles), tempertures will also
be lower with daytime highs
expected in the 27/29 Celsius,
while nightime temperatures to a
low of 16/17 Celsius.
