Malaysia to Transfer Cuba NAM
Presidency
Malaysia is ready to transfer
the Non Aligned Countries
Movement (NAM) presidency to
Cuba, with the vision of
revitalizing the work of that
114-nation body, Malaysian
Ambassador to the UN Hamidon Ali
informed Friday.
"We will prioritize the current
role of the movement considering
the evolution of international
politics, Hamidon told Prensa
Latina.
In its final days as 13th NAM
president, which post it has
held since the summit in Feb.
2003 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
is arranging the ministerial
meeting of the NAM Coordination
Bureau, to be held in Putrajaya,
May 27-30.
The Putrajaya gathering will
ready the way for the 14th
Summit of Heads of States and
Government in Havana September
11-16, in which Cuba will be NAM
president for the second time
since 1979.
"Malaysia and Cuba have been
revitalizing NAM and we expect
the Summit in Havana will tackle
tangible projects to benefit the
State members," stated Hamidon.
NAM emerged in the 60s, amid the
Cold War tense rivalries, with
the aim of fighting imperialism,
colonialism and neocolonialism.
