Volcán
Poás Quietens Down, Park Closed
Until Thursday
Since Friday the quiet and
docile volcán Poás made its
presence felt with a series of
eruptions - 14 in total - that
forced the closure of the
national park and kept experts
busy.
According to a report by the
Observatorio Vulcanológico y
Sismológico de Costa Rica (Ovsicori),
the volcano has quietened down
and have noted major changes in
seismic activity.
It is still too early to tell is
the volcano will go back to
sleep as it has for the last 12
years or any major changes in
the formation of the crater.
Lidier Esquivel, head of the
Comisión Nacional de Emergencias
(CNE), continues with his
message that the residents of
the nearby towns are not at risk
and that the park closure is
just a preventive measure.
Esquivel added that if the
situation changes, an alert will
be made immediately.
To be on the safe side, the CNE
said it will maintain the Parque
Nacional Volcán Poas for an
additional 72 hours, time to
needed to keep an eye on the
behaviour of the volcano.
The CNE said it will also use
the time to review its emergency
evacuation plans to ensure
security for visitors when the
park reopens.
When the park is reopened to the
public, one of the major changes
is the number of people that can
access the view of the crater at
any one time.
Guillermo Alvarado, a
volcanologist for the Red
Sismológica Nacional, explained
that the activity of the volcano
is partly due to a fracture in
the "coraza rocosa" - rock
armour - of the crater that
permits the spewing of gases.
