Mentally Ill Son Makes "Picadillo" of His Mother
Yesterday afternoon the residents of Buenos Aires de Puntarenas were shocked to learn of the gruesome acts of a 39 year old man who killed and dismembered his 63 year old mother with a machete, making "picadillo" (mince meat) of her.

The unusual and atrocious act occurred in the small community of La Puna Biolley, some 60 kilometres from Buenos Aires, on the road to San Vito in the southern part of the country.

Catalina Delgado, who is from San Francisco de Heredia, had just returned to Costa Rica to visit her family after having lived in the United States for several years, was killed by her own son, Mario Delgado Delgado, who appears to have mental problems.

Authorities say that Mario arrived at the home of his sister, Gerardina, the eldest of five siblings, early Monday morning, barefooted with a chain tied around one leg and full of blood, asking his sister to go the house where he was with their mother.

However, Gerardina's husband, saw that something terribly was wrong and tied up Mario with his wife's pants, the first thing closest to him. "He wanted to kill us all. He came looking for us, asking us to all go to the house, so that he could make mince meat out of us all", said Pedro Castrillo, Mario's brother-in-law.

While her husband took Mario to the local clinic, Gerardina proceeded to the house where her mother was staying since her arrival to Costa Rica on March 23.

Gerardina searched everywhere for her mother. When she couldn't find her, she went to the neighbours for help who joined in the search for the woman. Minutes later,  the first gruesome discovery was made, that of women's clothing a piece of meat that appeared human, strewn in a sugar cane field.

Police were immediately called and the search for the rest of the woman began. All the parts of the woman's body were found and police moved quickly to protect the scene of the crime and the woman's body from vultures and insects before Judicial officials could arrive to officially take over the investigation.

The woman's body parts were then transferred to the Medicatura Forense (Forensic Laboratory) in San Joaquín de Flores, Heredia.

Mario is now in police custody.

63 year old Catalina Delgado was killed by her mentally ill son only days after returning to Costa Rica after living in the United States for two years.
