Guatemalans against US Torture
Guatemalan thinkers called the
US Wednesday the biggest human
rights violator worldwide and
demanded the closure of its
torture and detention centers
around the globe.
Marcos Sagastume, professor at
San Carlos de Guatemala
University, joined the call by
international thinkers and
asserted the White House lacks
moral authority to report on
other nations´ citizen
prerogatives.
Sagastume, also a migration
advisor, called offensive and
shameful the wall Washington
wants to build along its border
with Mexico to impede
undocumented people from
entering its territory and
criminalize them.
Likewise, legal expert Alfonso
Bauer, another Guatemalan
academic, condemned rights
violations on the US black and
mixed race population while
reminding that most of those
sentenced to death penalty
belong to those minorities.
Bauer pleaded for closing of the
US prison in illegal Guantanamo
naval base and the detention
centers in Europe and other
nations.
The well-known expert was one of
the first to back the
international call, signed by
4,000 global intellectuals to
date, against the war in Iraq
and human rights violations by
the US.
