El Salvador's ruling party wins parliamentary vote
The ruling alliance in El Salvador has won last week's parliamentary elections, the country's electoral court said Saturday in the capital San Salvador.

According to the final results announced by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, the ruling Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) took 34 seats in the 84-seat parliament, while the biggest opposition Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) got 32 seats.

The National Conciliation Party garnered 10 seats, and the Democratic Christian Party and the Party of Democratic Change took six and two seats respectively.

Meanwhile, FMLN candidate Violeta Menjivar narrowly beat Rodrigo Samayoa of ARENA by only 44 votes in the mayoral race of the capital San Salvador.

Some 3.8 million Salvadorans voted in the March 12 elections, which also appoint 262 mayors across the nation.
