Argentina Optimistic On Eco
Problem
Argentine Foreign Relations
Minister Jorge Taina reaffirmed
his nation´s optimism to resolve
the border cellulose plant
problem with Uruguay because
work is proceeding seriously and
rapidly toward negotiations.
In his press conference, Taina
referred to the joint plea by
Presidents Nestor Kirchner and
Tabare Vazquez for both
Argentine environmentalists and
construction companies in
Uruguay to suspend activities
for 90 days to allow an
international evaluation of
possible pollution.
The cellulose factories were
begun in March 2005 by Ence of
Spain and Botnia of Finland in
the border town of Fray Bentos
on the Uruguay River, shared by
both countries.
Ecologists and residents of
Argentine Entre Rios Province,
particularly of the border towns
Gualeguaychu and Colon, have
blocked international bridges
for more than 40 days.
The foreign minister was
optimistic both sides would
observe the truce and said this
bilateral difference would not
interfere with relations within
MERCOSUR (the Southern Common
Market), but if it cannot be
resolved, Buenos Aires will take
the issue to The Hague
International Court of Justice.
