Salvadoran Woman FMLN Capital Mayor
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) confirmed on Thursday that Violeta Menjivar of the progressive Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), won the San Salvador mayor´s office after Wednesday night disturbances.

Menjivar won with 44 votes, after 84 disputed votes were recounted, official sources reported.

This is the fourth three-year period that the FMLN will govern San Salvador, having won also in 11 cities on the edge of the capital. Menjivar is the first San Salvador woman mayor.

Incidents occurred after FMLN demonstrators spent 36 hours in the center of the capital protesting a possible electoral fraud, and decided to march to Radisson hotel.

They were greeted by anti-riot agents and helicopters, and a clash followed with stones, rubber bullets, and gas. Protesters were persuaded later by their leaders to withdraw to the El Salvador del Mundo plaza.
