LaserCard Fills Resident Cards
Order
The LaserCard Corp. recently
completed the shipment of highly
secure optical memory-based
Permanent Resident Cards to be
issued by Costa Rica to its
legal non-citizen residents.
The card, which features custom
artwork and security features,
follows the layout of the
so-called US "Green Card" and
the "Border Crossing Card (BCC)
and is designed to be
"interoperable" with the optical
memory-based border inspections
systems implemented by the US
and Canadian governments.
Costa Rica is reportedly the
first Latin American country to
implement such an electronic ID
card program, and, according to
local press reports, the card
will replace various documents
that identify different types of
immigration status granted by
the government in San Jose.
The card will have a five-year
validity with annual renewals.
The order - valued at more than
$500,000 - was placed by an
unidentified value-added
reseller of the Mountain
View-headquartered company.
LaserCard has sold more than 29
million "Green Cards" and BCCs
since 1997 to customers in
Canada, Italy, India, and the
US.
