Libertarios Want to Eliminate
Pensions to Former Presidents
With only 54 days to go before
President Abel Pacheco loses his
job, he could lose his pension
as well, if a proposed law being
spearheaded by the Movimiento
Libertario (ML) moves quickly
through the Legislature.
The "Ley para derogar las
pensiones especiales a los ex
presidentes" would eliminated
pensions to ex-presidents on the
basis that it was not obtained
without any individual payment.
The ML says that the majority of
workers have to work a great
part of the life and pay dues
for at least 30 years to obtain
their pension, that in somes
cases doesn't leave enough to
even meet the basis needs.
ML Deputy, Carlos Salazar, said
"the Libertariios don't question
the recognition of a just
pension for ex-presidents, but
not to hand them a pension when
many still have a productive
work life ahead of them."
Salazar added that Costa Rica in
heavy debt and needs to stop
increasing that debt and make
cuts to things like pensions to
former presidents.
