Distrust Threatens Salvadoran
Elections
Salvadoran political parties and
social sectors have expressed
suspicion about the municipal
and legislative elections to be
held on Sunday.
Central American University and
Cid Gallup polls corroborated
citizens' fear of possible fraud
following the Electoral Supreme
Court declaration of possible
failure in the computing system
during the final count.
The Farabundo Marti for National
Liberation (FMLN) party
considered this institution is
controlled by the government and
called on the people to defeat
corrupt officials and remove
them from power.
The Organization of American
States made an inspection, at
the request of the Electoral
Supreme Court, and assured the
mechanism used is appropriate
although it recommended its
analysis after the polls.
Medardo Gonzalez, FMLN general
secretary, called upon
candidates to acknowledge
Salvadorian reality, deeply
marred by corruption and
poverty.
FMLN deputy-candidate Salvador
Sanchez called on party
sympathizers to man polling
places to ensure responsible
functioning and guarantee
transparency in Sunday´s
elections.
